Driving in to this inn, surrounded by tall privacy hedges and spanning one acre, reminded us of being transported to a small English mansion. We have seen a lot of bed and breakfasts over the past fifteen years but this has to be one of our all-time favorites - for its attention to detail, the beautiful gardens and the kindness of the innkeeper (most critics would agree as it is North America's only 5-diamond B&B).
Many times when you arrive to a hotel, you are asked for your name and confirmation number. Here, it is as if you are a family member that is coming home. They seem to know who you are and why are visiting (anniversary, honeymoon, birthday). After parking your car, they greet you and walk you directly to your room where you are quickly "checked in" and then left to enjoy getting settled in. You may notice your own individually created welcome amenity - created just for you with personalized note.
With some B&B's, people don't like the fact that you almost have to mix with the other guests. At the Simpson House Inn, everyting is geared around couples and your privacy - including plenty of tables for two to enjoy your breakfast in the out on the deck or in the garden.
The property is divided in to several parts including the main house (more of an oppulant Victorian style - beautiful mosaic wallpaper designs), the Old Barn (rustic elegance - antique pine floors and Oriental rugs. French doors open onto private decks overlooking the bed and breakfast gardens. Each suite has a king bed, a loveseat by the wood burning fireplace and antique furniture) and the Garden Cottages (Abbeywood, Greenwich and Plumstead: Each one opens onto a private intimate fountain courtyard where you can linger over breakfast. These Santa Barbara cottages also feature antique canopied queen featherbeds, loveseats by wood burning fireplaces, and an in-room Jacuzzi tub for luxuriating.
